As a family-owned company, our view is long term. We vow to never give up our standards or forget why we started True Story: to provide families with delicious, natural food deeply rooted in values and ethical practices.

Our commitment

We want you to know who raises your food, where and how. We want you to know what we do to make our practices sustainable, and where we’re continually trying to do better.

The Environment

By relying on a network of small family farms, we can maintain strict standards of environmental stewardship. What’s more, our farmers are naturally incentivized to do so—they have been embedded in their farms and local communities for generations, and will be for generations to come. This environmental commitment extends past the farm and to our production facilities, shipping and packaging in the following ways:


  • Sequestering carbon on our farms and using farm management practices that protect the quality of the air, water and soil.
  • Treating wastewater at our production facilities to a high level of cleanliness to minimize the burden on our municipal systems.
  • Reducing plastics in our packaging by 10%.
  • Using biodegradable packing materials instead of styrofoam to insulate our shipments.
  • Reducing food waste, both in the way that we make our products and the partnerships that we’ve created with retailers committed to reducing food waste like Imperfect Foods and Misfits Market.

Our Land

Our family farms think of their operations as small ecosystems. We’re on a constant journey to improve our practices, including efforts to implement:

  • Diversified farming operations, including holistic, integrated systems of livestock, grain, hay, pasture, vegetable and forest product enterprises
  • Regenerative agriculture practices such as minimum and no-tillage farming, mulching, crop rotation, cover crops, and composting
  • Minimal use of fertilizer, plus regular soil analysis to prevent the overloading of phosphorous and other elements.

Our People

Our founding team represents four generations of sausage and charcuterie makers steeped deeply in the tradition of doing things the right way, not the fast way. We believe sustainability starts with people who believe deeply in raising meat right, and have the means and incentives to do so.

  • Our unique cost-plus model, developed by 5th generation hog farmer and True Story partner Russ Kremer, means that our small family farmers are guaranteed a stable, sustainable income with the opportunity to earn more—encouraging innovation and keeping the spirit of entrepreneurship and independence alive.
  • We take care of all our team members, including those who prepare, cook and package great-tasting True Story products.
