Grilling Your Hot Dogs

Whether you prefer a gas or charcoal grill,  grilling hot dogs is easy if you follow a few simple tips and tricks. First, if you want to use some cooking spray to help keep your hot dogs from sticking we recommend that you spray it on your grill before you introduce heat; this way you don’t get any flare-ups while cooking. If you’re using a gas grill, make sure that you give it enough time to properly warm up before you begin cooking. And if you’re working with a charcoal grill, you’ll want to wait until your charcoal is covered with a white ash before you get started.

Tip 1: Don’t walk away!

One of the greatest advantages of making grilled hot dogs is that they cook fast, but this means that you’ll need to stay nearby and keep a watch over them. When it comes to how to grill the perfect hot dog, the cardinal rule is constant vigilance. When you place your hotdogs on the grill, it’s best to use tongs to position the hot dogs perpendicular to your grill grates. This will help you achieve those eye-catching grill marks that we all love.

Tip 2: Turn, baby, turn!

If you want to achieve the perfect finished hot dog, then the turning method will be best for you. All that this method entails is using your tongs to roll the hot dogs during their cooking process, giving each side contact with the grill. Every hot dog is different, so we can’t tell you when yours will be done exactly, but you’ll want to turn your hot dogs when medium brown grill lines have formed on the surface that’s in contact with the grill. Then, just keep turning your hot dogs for 5-7 minutes, or until the ends start to show little fissures and moisture starts sizzling out. When others hear the sizzle of succulent juices hitting your searing hot grill and start to crowd around you, you’ll know that your hot dogs are ready to be served.

Tip 3: Don’t forget the buns!

While not everyone will enjoy buns with their hot dogs, as there are many yummy bun substitutes for our gluten-free friends out there; if you are going to serve up your finished hot dogs with buns don’t forget to show them a little love too! Did you know that you can lightly toast your hot dog buns on the grill? Because you can, and the results are delicious and savory. All you need to do is spread some melted butter lightly over the inside of the buns and then place them face down on your grill for no more than a minute. This way you’ll lightly toast the interior of the bun where the hot dog will rest, but you won’t dry out the bread. And if you really want to wow your friends and family, try adding some garlic or herbs to your butter mixture. Yum!
