As of January 1st, 2024, California retailers must comply with Proposition 12. This animal welfare law prohibits retailers and foodservice operators from selling pork raised below Prop 12’s crate-free standards.
Also known as the Farm Animal Confinement Initiative, Prop 12 prohibits the sale of eggs, veal or pork that has been confined in a cruel manner (as defined by the policy). Pigs must be raised with at least 24 square feet of space per animal, a rule which effectively bans the use of gestation crates—a common practice in the pork industry.
At True Story, we have always exceeded the standards set by Prop 12. Not because it was required, but because we believe it’s right. All of our pork is Prop 12 compliant: not just our fresh pork, but also our bacon, ham, sausage, and other further processed pork products.
