Still sizzling strips of hickory smoked bacon? Check. Thick discs of ripe tomato? Yup. Crisp lettuce leaf? You betcha. She spread (confession: slathered) mayo on both sides of toasted whole wheat, piled on the goodness, and then topped with a dash of salt and pepper. Voila. Hello, beautiful!

Organic Ground Pork

They peaked under the lid. “Done yet?” she whispered. “Almost,” her dad said. He was anxious too. They’d spent the afternoon making dumplings using his grandmother’s recipe and now they were waiting for the steam to do its magic. Between the flavorful heritage pork, grated knob of ginger, crushed garlic, soy sauce and minced bits of this’s and that’s, they were hoping for greatness. Ten minutes and eight dumplings later, that’s exactly what they got.

Organic Bone-In Pork Chops

She couldn’t believe it when he told her he’d never tasted a pork chop. “Oh come on. Never?” Tonight she was remedying the injustice. She purchased the best chops around — heritage breed — and rubbed them with coriander, chipotle and cumin. While they sizzled on the grill, she and her knife turned onions, peppers, garlic and cilantro into a wickedly fine salsa. She put the chops on the plates. He took one bite…and realized what he’d been missing.

Organic Pork Boneless Chops

“This is supposed to be a casual dinner,” she reminds her. “I know, I know,” she mumbles as she stuffs each plump heritage pork chop with Cremini mushrooms, chopped parsley, garlic and lemon zest. “It’s mostly just for you guys to meet one another,” she says as she watches roasted garlic get popped into the polenta, the chops start to sizzle in the oven, and the beans hit the steamer. Nothing like a meet-and-greet with the parents to inspire a great meal.

Organic Pork Loin Roast

The picnic table was nearly invisible under the mishmash of bowls and trays spilling over with salsas, beans, rice, roasted corn, fresh tortillas and, the centerpiece, a near mountain of glistening, just-grilled strips of heritage pork loin roast. Everyone oohed and ahhed, kissing the chef — their beautiful abuela — on the check. She was the last to get her meal, by choice. Being with her family was (almost) nourishment enough.
